    Ticket Price:
    £15

“Ken Peplowski is arguably the greatest living jazz clarinetist” Russell Davies, BBC2 August 2013

After a year of college, Ken joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow. “Buddy heard me with my quartet at a Cleveland jazz festival along with Teddy Wilson’s trio and the Dorsey band, and made an offer right then and there for me to not only play lead alto, but to have a feature spot on the clarinet with the rhythm section. It was a great ‘road-school’ – we learned the discipline that goes with playing one-nighters every day for 48 weeks out of the year, and Buddy was a great, very generous bandleader.”

Peplowski met Sonny Stitt while on the road with the Dorsey band, and studied with him. “He was, and is, an inspiration to all of of us who make a living ‘on the road’ – I’ve never heard anybody play with such amazing consistency as Sonny, through all kinds of settings.”

In 1984, Benny Goodman came out of retirement and put together a new band, hiring Ken on tenor saxophone.

Ken is joined this evening by JULIAN MARC STRINGLE - Master Clarinettist and said by the late John Dankworth to be the best to emerge in British Jazz for decades.

The evening is completed by the simply superb CRAIG MILVERTON TRIO

As well as being a great band player, Ted is equally at home performing as an innovative soloist or providing an excellent accompaniment for any vocalist. As well as being part of the great Humphrey Lyttleton Band for many years, he has played alongside many fine soloists such as Spike Robinson, Al Cohn, Don Rendell to name but a very few.

Ted has performed world-wide and yet manages to maintain his superb musicianship around Britain and on the London jazz scene - of which he is such an integral part.

Supporting Ted this evening will be MURRAY SALMON on Bass and LES CIRKEL on Drums.

VASILIS XENOPOLOUS is one of the most fiery young saxophonists around as he blazes a path through a hard bop repertoire. He's a great favourite at Bexley - and this time introduces us to yet another tenorist with a rapidly growing reputation.

CHARIS IOANNOU was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1976. In 1997 he was enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and won the Woodwind Achievement Award in the last year of his studies in Boston. Charis left the United States in 2005 and moved back to Cyprus.

Charis is currently teaching the saxophone and the jazz idiom at the University of Nicosia as well as making guest faculty appearances in workshops held in Italy, Lebanon and Greece and continuing to perform and record as a leader as well as a sideman in Cyprus and abroad.
Charis has also appeared at Ronnie Scott's in London.

Supporting Vasilis and Charis this evening will be a truly great Trio -
    RICHARD BUSIAKIEWICZ/Keys.....ANDY CLEYNDERT/Bass.......ROD BROWN/Drums
