Ammons was one of the founders of the Chicago style of tenor saxophone playing and forged a lasting partnership with Sonny Stitt - recording some classic tenor battles in the 1950s.
In spite of two "intervals" in his career in 1969 Ammons was offered what was the largest contract ever offered at that time by Prestige.
This Project focuses on music spanning Gene Ammons' entire career from1943 to 1974.

Completing the line up this evening will be LIAM DUNACHIE/Hammond - ARNIE SOMOGI/Bass and MATT HOME/Drums

    Monday 24th September 2018 at 8:00pm
    Ticket Price:
    £12

Simon tells us that his project with bassist AMY BALDWIN is often a duo - but tonight we have a piano trio with drummer PATRICK DAVEY.
The music is inspired by Scot LaFaro and Bill Evans and In terms of audience, the repertoire is certainly recognisable for most jazz folk. However, there is also some counterpoint - a 'vibe' and concept that makes the music different from blowing through familiar standards. Amy is a great soloist and the trio has worked hard on the 'trio sound'..........it does SWING too !!
